B.C. Expert Climate Professors Launch Online Learning Presentation for Public Education
The world may be getting warmer, but something very cool happened today in the world of B.C. Climate Action & Education.
For those not familiar with the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS), this UVic-hosted knowledge network of climate experts collaborating from across UVic, UBC, SFU and UNBC integrates top-notch research, teaching, problem-solving and communicating in order to address climate change issues in British Columbia: mitigation solutions, adaptation opportunities, and low-carbon economics.
Today, PICS proudly announced the launch of an innovative series of online climate change short courses: Climate Insights 101 uses a combination of animations, interviews and dynamic media to engage and educate people on the basic concepts of Climate Change and includes B.C. context and examples.
As described by PICS executive director Dr. Tom Pedersen, “People who don’t work in science are often intimidated by it, so these courses will go a long way towards demystifying the physics of the climate change we are seeing. It makes traditionally tough subject matter accessible as well as entertaining.”
Module 1, entitled “Climate Science” consists of an introduction and 4 half-hour lessons:
• CO2 and the Greenhouse Effect
• Climate Change: Mother Nature’s Influence
• Observable Changes; and
• Introduction to Climate Modeling.
Subsequent Modules will be rolled out in the future.
What's even cooler is that especially-nifty moments and features from the courses will be available individually as quick 2-minutes-or-so online video clips... Be sure to watch for these "reels" later this year in our LiveSmart BC social media feeds... like them, retweet them, share them, etc.
So be cool: grab your bagged lunch full of local food in reusable containers that you purchased on your last bicycle ride to the grocer, sit down at your desk, close the blinds, turn off the lights, and take a 30-minute break to enjoy some entertaining and informative climate science!
