LiveSmart BC Community Hero: Heather Grimshire
As chief recycling operator for a pilot program Parks Canada started in July, Heather has been primarily responsible for the latest improvements on the recycling bins found in all the day-use areas of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.
Spurred on by outcry on public comment cards, Heather has overseen the installation of bear-proof recycling bins throughout the park -- making the park both a greener environment and ensuring there has not been the need to kill a single bear on park property since the program's inception.
Though one immediately thinks of recyclables like cans and plastic containers as the primary culprits at campgrounds, Heather picked up over 300 used propane bottles over the span of two months alone.
"Disposing of propane bottles is a tricky business," remarks Heather. She had to request 300 "green keys," which ensure all the propane has been emptied from a tank before it can be safely recycled.
In addition to the campgrounds and parking lots, Heather is responsible for ensuring Parks Canada work areas and the Pacific Rim Visitor's Centre are meeting their recycling duties. And though the crowds may have died down after Thanksgiving, locals and the influx of stormwatchers ensure Heather has her work cut out for her, continually emptying the bear-proof recycling bins -- thereby removing any incentive for bears to come down to feed -- and also ensuring the campgrounds and day-use areas remain clean and green.
As for the future of her pilot project, Heather foresees installation of separate recycling bins for paper, plastic, and metals at all public locations, as well as clearer signage on the bins, advocating education for respecting the cleanliness of our environment, as well as keeping our parks cleaner and greener.
