LiveSmart BC Community Hero: Aurora Lindsay

She only forgot to wear her gloves once, and when she got to school her hands were two cold reminders of why to keep them covered while riding. Eight-year old Aurora Lindsay and her dad make it a habit of riding their bike to school/work and furthermore have plans to ride it all year around.

“We have studded tires on the bike,” says her dad, Devin. “I want people to know that you can’t ride a bike on ice and snow unless it has studded tires.”

As for the Lindsay’s, they have all the bases covered: they have bike helmets, rain gear, belaclavas, warm mittens, heavy coats to break the wind and warm boots. Riding their bike all winter will not be deemed much of a hardship for the pair. Devin said that when he lived in Vancouver he rode everywhere and found it was a very healthy and easy means of transportation.

So, when a second-hand tandem bike went on sale this summer, Aurora and her dad purchased it with the plan to ride to school and work as often as they could.

Come September, they began riding ‘Tandy’ to town.

“Three out of five days we ride the bike,” says Devin. “I need a car for work so we haven’t gotten rid of it completely.”

In fact, the Lindsay’s have recently bought a new car under the government's Scrap-it-Program.

Says Devin of the program, “We sold our old vehicle to get the [up to] $2,250 incentive rebate. The rebate goes toward the purchase of transit passes, a low emission vehicle or a new bicycle.”

Even though they have a car, the bike has been their main choice of transportation since the summer.
