Citizens’ Conservation Councils Status Report
On March 11, 2009, the Citizens’ Conservation Councils on Climate Action presented their first status report to the provincial government:
Government Response
The Province has already implemented key recommendations from the report, and is actively considering others. Find out what has already been accomplished, below.
Project Blue Sky
The Province supported the councils’ endorsement and promotion of Project Blue Sky, which was launched in July 2009. It’s a grassroots, province-wide challenge to reduce greenhouse gases. The councils recommended this type of challenge as a fun and friendly way for British Columbians to reduce their carbon footprints.
Climate Action Inventory
The councils advised government that regionally-relevant information on climate change and practical everyday solutions should be developed and provided to local citizens. In addition, a directory of local climate action organizations would help connect communities and citizens. Working with community leaders on the councils, the Province identified over 300 local organizations and governments that are active in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Climate Action Inventory provides overviews of individual projects with an interactive web-based tool on LiveSmart BC.
Climate Action Working Groups
To stimulate green low-carbon business opportunities and provide leadership, another of the councils’ recommendations, the Province is working with eleven working groups consisting of major industrial sectors, organized labour and environmental organizations. The Climate Action Working Groups provide opportunities for mutual learning and information sharing.
