According to independent economic analysis and modelling, the initiatives included in B.C.'s Climate Action Plan will take us 73% of the way to our 2020 emissions reduction target.

November 2007 UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concludes that climate change is caused by human activity and will only get worse if no action is taken.
June/July 2008 British Columbians receive a $100 climate action dividend.
July 1, 2008

Revenue-neutral carbon tax comes into effect. The carbon tax makes it possible to reduce the bottom two income tax brackets by 2 per cent, reduce the small business tax rate from 4.5 to 3.5 per cent, and reduce the general corporate rate to 11 per cent.

August 2008

Climate Action Team makes recommendations on how to close the gap to meet the goal of 33 per cent emissions reduction by 2020, and recommend interim targets for 2012 and 2016.

October 22, 2008

British Columbia’s Economic Plan released.  Personal income tax cut of 5 per cent is retroactive to January 1, 2008.

November 25, 2008

Interim greenhouse gas emissions targets set at 6 per cent for 2012 and 18 per cent for 2016.

December 1, 2008

Small business income tax rate reduced to 2.5 per cent from 3.5 per cent due to the revenue-neutral carbon tax. This accelerates the tax cut by two years.

A fleet of 20 new BC Transit hydrogen fuel-cell buses based in Whistler begin service.
