Blog: Happy Groundhog Day 2012 (Climate New Years)

Happy New Year! At least, that seems to be what Groundhogs across B.C. suggest: an early spring!
Can you believe it's February already? Wow, time flies when you’re busy taking climate action and shooting King Tide Photos (see slideshow below). Some of us are still waiting for the start of the cold winter that was forecasted but never arrived. It's tempting to use this observation to demonstrate global warming and climate change - but keep in mind that Climate is defined as the long-term trend in weather patterns over significant time periods (Learn More). Instead, observe how 8 of B.C.’s 15 hottest years on record have taken place in the past 15 years (Radio interview with Dr. Francis Zweirs / page 2 of recent PCIC update)...

NR: Renewable fuel amendments enacted

VICTORIA – John Yap, Clean Technology Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Energy and Mines has announced amendments to the renewable and low carbon fuel requirements regulation.
The use of renewable fuel in 2010 saved 418,919 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions from being released into the environment, the equivalent of about 82,000 cars being removed from the road.
The amendment delays the requirement for fuel suppliers to reduce the carbon intensity of their fuels. This will mean that the carbon-intensity requirements will continue to be reporting-only until June 30, 2013. The Province remains committed to its low-carbon fuel requirement target of 10 per cent by 2020…

NR: Okanagan College Building a Sustainable Future

PENTICTON – Okanagan College’s newest building – a world-class teaching and applied research facility dedicated to sustainable building technologies – officially opened its doors today.
The Jim Pattison Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Technologies and Renewable Energy Conservation exemplifies sustainability inside and out, and will become a leader in education and applied research into sustainable building practices in B.C.…
…The centre is one of the world’s greenest buildings. It was created to train trades people, site managers and construction workers skilled in sustainable building practices. It is also designed to be one of most innovative and advanced sustainable facilities in the world, living up to the standards of the Living Building Challenge – the most rigorous sustainability program in the world…
…The building is ventilated and cooled using the natural flow of air across cool concrete floors and exhausted through solar chimneys; windows feature a green light/red light system to indicate when they can be opened to maximize cooling…
…The building is expected to use 65 kilowatt-hours of energy per square metre per year. A typical building of similar size and construction would use approximately 250 kilowatt-hours per square metre per year, making this building one of the most energy efficient in North America…
…The building aspires to be the first of its type to achieve the Living Building Challenge, the very highest standard for sustainable construction, which requires proof of true carbon neutrality.

Clean Energy Vehicles – The long wait is over, they’re finally here, and so are a suite of supportive provincial programs!

Over the past few years, countless individuals and organisations have taken the time to write letters, encouraging the BC Government to consider providing incentives and programs in support of Clean Energy Vehicles. If you are reading this, you may well have been one of the many who took the time to write! During the same period the Plug-in BC Working Group has been working behind the scenes to attract auto manufactures to our province by developing a range of strategies to ensure BC is a CEV-ready province, including partnering on pilot projects which saw some of the first CEVs make their debut in BC...

YMIR – Compliance and Enforcement staff removed almost 240 tons (529,000 lbs.) of illegally-dumped garbage from Crown land near Oscar Creek earlier this month with help from local volunteers and businesses.
Clean-up involved using a special, long-reach backhoe that could reach 19 metres (65 feet) downhill to remove the waste – everything from old cars, appliances, furniture, yard waste, household garbage to animal carcasses.

VICTORIA –The Province has officially proclaimed Oct. 17-23 as Waste Reduction Week, which is aimed at raising public awareness about the importance of recycling, Environment Minister Terry Lake announced today.
“Waste Reduction Week provides a way to get more people thinking about the waste they produce and efforts they can take to reduce the flow of material into landfills, said Lake. “Recycling is an action that just makes sense because it significantly reduces GHG emissions.”…
…The reduction of GHG emissions through the recycling of beer containers is equivalent to taking 13,000 cars off the road.

The September sun sets a little sooner each night signalling the end of summer. And as the school year schedule sinks in, and the seasons change in British Columbia, so too do our transportation needs
Vacations may be over, but kids need to be picked up and dropped off, students begin commuting to-and-from classes or travelling home on weekends/holidays, and the labour force needs to get to work in order to pay for it all... luckily there are ways to save time, money, and live smarter on the road
The obvious first choice would be to walk. Maybe not everywhere everyday; but there are probably plenty of walkable pieces if you pace yourself…

For a limited time, residents of the Capital Regional District that are selling their homes are eligible for a $150 rebate towards an energy assessment that will provide them with an EnerGuide for Houses rating to include in their listing on the Multi-Listing Service (MLS®) website…

SEATTLE – Washington State Gov. Chris Gregoire and British Columbia Premier Christy Clark met for the first time today...
“British Columbia and Washington state share a common green agenda that includes a strong economy and job creation,” Premier Clark said. “Governments around the world are confronted with the realities of climate change and I look forward to working with Washington State to find innovative and green ways to grow our economies and create jobs for families on both sides of the border. I also look forward to collaborating with Governor Gregoire who has shown true vision and leadership.”...
Ever since the 2007 Memorandum of Understanding on Climate Action between Washington and British Columbia, both have worked together to jointly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In February 2011, this partnership was strengthened with new agreements to limit carbon emissions from government operations and facilities and to promote awareness about the rise of sea levels.

Blog: Earth Hour is coming up: March 26 starting at 8:30pm

The countdown to the World's 5th annual Earth Hour is drawing near. The event occurs around the world on March 26th at 8:30-9:30pm local time.

Earth Hour 2010 became the biggest Earth Hour ever reaching 1.3 billion people. A record 138 countries and territories united across the globe making this the largest voluntary action ever witnessed. In 2010 over 10 million Canadians took part in all provinces and territories, turning out the lights in over 300 cities and towns.

Individuals and businesses in B.C. are encouraged to participate in order to demonstrate behaviour changes that lower energy consumption and support the Province's fight against climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Climate Action begins with greener choices that we can all do personally. Earth Hour provides a unique opportunity to see the changes we can achieve collectively (e.g. darker city skyline) and also measure it (e.g. power consumption drop).

Last year, BC Hydro reported a power consumption drop of over 1% during the 60 minutes of Earth Hour, with some communities like Burns Lake decreasing by 7%! The province-wide reductions were equivalent to turning off about 1.4 million lights. Stay tuned to BC Hydro's Earth Hour page for more details and stats.

Even though British Columbia produces relatively low-carbon electricity, because power grids transcend borders, the energy savings realised in B.C. allow for reduced power generation in other places that emit significant carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere: thus helping protect this globally shared resource, the affects on which impact the world as a whole.

Earth Hour is hosted globally by the World Wildlife Fund. The WWF's Earth Hour Canada website describes ways to pledge and participate as well as promote the event using Facebook and Twitter (use #EarthHour hashtag).

Of course turning off lights, appliances and gadgets is only one way to act green and live smart. Other ways include dressing warmly and turning down the thermostat, closing the blinds at night in the winter, taking shorter showers, commuting by transit to work or school, planning your weekend car trips in advance and checking your tire pressure, insulating your home or business, buying local food and materials with less packaging, air drying your laundry, printing double-sided and less often, purchasing energy and fuel efficient systems to replace old equipment... the list goes on...
UPDATE: This year, get connected with social apps and Go Beyond The Hour...

Blog: King Tides, Living Cities - Planning for the Future: using data from today to prepare for tomorrow

On December 20th, John Yap (Minister of State for Climate Action) and Dr. Francis Zwiers (Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium) attended a near-record high tide event in Victoria. (News Release)

Known as a King Tide, a phenomenon that takes place in the early winter and summer, the high tide event produced a water level only 42 centimetres below the all-time record. Winter King Tides are usually more pronounced, and are expected to be especially high this year.

Although King Tides are not related to climate change and the expected rise in sea level, they are a predictor of what future "normal" high tides might look like. To see what is happening in B.C., visit and take part in the King Tide Photo Initiative.

The impacts of climate change are diverse and include sea level rise and the related flooding and erosion, increased rainfall in some areas and decreased snowfall leading to summer drought and water shortages. With changes to the natural systems we rely on, it will be up to the planners, designers and builders of tomorrow to learn what they can from the effects we can see today.

The Living City Design Competition , put on by the Cascadia Green Building Council, challenges participants to do just that. B.C.'s Climate Action Secretariat encourages designers and firms to consider the future impacts of climate change in B.C. The following resources are provided to support entrants when designing "a city capable of thriving through the centuries".
